Hair Loss – What Is Telogen Effluvium?

Hair loss takes upon many different forms. One of the most common forms is known as Telogen Effluvium. You may stop and ask: “What is this condition called Telogen Effluvium?“. In this condition, there is a widespread shedding of hair around the scalp and other parts of the body.

Telogen Effluvium is caused by many different things. In usual cases, it is due to a reaction to intense stress or medication. Both the physical system and the hormonal system can be under a lot of stress. Stress is never a good thing. We should learn to relax and calm our mind and body.

The condition takes time to develop. In mild cases there is a general thinning of hair. The hair is not as dense and a lot weaker. The condition affects both men and women and it can affect people of all ages. Both young and old can be affected.

Telogen Effluvium lasts for roughly six months. In the rare case, the condition can last for years. If it lasts for years, it is said to be a chronic problem and special help from specialised doctors should be sought out.

Fortunately, in most cases it gets better with time. The problem is closely related to the growth cycles of hair.

Growth cycles of hair alternate between two different phases.

  • The first phase lasts for roughly three years. This first phase is the growth phase and has a special name called anagen. During these three years the hair grows out from the hair follicle.
  • The second phase lasts for a lot shorter time. This phase is called telogen and it is where the hair is in its resting phase. While the hair is resting, it is waiting for the new hair which is sprouting up under it, to push it out of the hair follicle. Essentially the new hair which is in anagen pushes out the old hair and replaces it.

The life of the hair follicles alternate between the two phases. Old hair is replaced by new. Studies have shown that roughly 15 per cent of the hair on a person’s head is telogen. When the body’s systems don’t function properly, there is a larger amount of hair in telogen.

In conclusion, many people experience the condition called telogen effluvium at least one point in their lives. It is normally at a time when the body is under a lot of stress. Illness can also be the cause.

Acupuncture and Headaches

One of the most common complaints among patients is headaches. Headaches affect people’s health in many different ways. There are many different kinds of headaches such as migraine, cluster, and tension headaches. One form of medicine that has been treating headaches for over two thousand years is Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

Chinese medicine and Western medicine view headaches differently. Western medicine headaches are a subjective symptom of a disease. Some of the diseases that may cause a headache are trigeminal neuralgia, sinus, eye disorders, head injuries, and meningitis. These are only a few, but there are many different diseases that can cause headaches. There are also many different types of headaches with different characteristics such as tension headaches, migraine, and clutter headaches. The treatment options for headaches in Western medicine depends on the type of headache, but usually will include some type of pain relieving medication such as NSAID or opiates. There are also many different diagnostic techniques to diagnose the different types of headaches such as x-rays and MRI’s.

According to Chinese medicine headaches are not only a subjective symptom but also a disease. Chinese medicine also has different types of headaches according to the different types of pathology. For example a headache can be caused from an internal organ disorder. When the liver, spleen and kidney are out of disharmony and the essential substances in the body such as blood, energy, essence is not nourishing the brain a headache may occur. There can be many different causes for headaches according to Chinese medicine. You must see a Chinese doctor who can ask you some questions, look at your tongue, and feel your pulse to see what type of headache you have. After a correct Chinese medical diagnosis is made then the appropriate treatment can be made whether it is acupuncture, herbs, tui na or a combination of modalities.

Chinese medical treatment for headaches may include acupuncture, herbs, and tui na. Acupuncture has been very effective for treating headaches. It allows the energy and blood to flow better and promote the body’s self healing mechanisms. An acupuncturist will mainly use acupuncture points according to what type of headache and disharmony that the practitioner find. There are also manly different herbal formulas that will help with headaches. It all depends on what your Chinese medical diagnosis is to determine what herbal formula to describe. Tui na is Chinese medical massage. Tui na can be used in conjunction with acupuncture to enhance the healing effects. There are tui na manipulations that can be effective for headaches.

Chinese medicine overall is a viable treatment option for headaches.

Different Types of Diabetes

Diabetes is an increasingly common illness affecting some 23.6 million children and adults in the United States equating to 7.8% of the population in 2007. But what exactly is Diabetes? Many do not know there are various different types. This includes a pregnancy or gestational onset and a post surgical onset. Diabetes relates to insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas that allows the body to metabolize carbohydrates or sugars. Insulin is also the hormone that makes us feel hungry. Carbohydrates are in just about everything we eat. The more simple the sugar, the faster it is digested as fuel for the body. One problem is if not used as energy, carbohydrates turn to fat.

The most prevalent form of Diabetes is Type 2 comprising some 90-95 percent of those with the affliction. This often strikes those over 35 and is a metabolic disorder in which the body has difficulty using its own insulin. A resistance develops that is furthered as fat cells release fatty acids that worsen this effect. Blood glucose (sugar) levels rise but the insulin stimulates hunger aiding weight gain further perpetuating the resistive cycle. As a subset, Type 2a patients are usually overweight and must use well-managed eating, usually avoiding simple sugars and oral medications for control. Some do come to need insulin injections especially if weight gain continues. Type 2b patients usually are not overweight and control their blood glucose levels by eating properly and frequently. These patients produce adequate insulin but there is a retarded release slowing metabolization.

Type 1 is juvenile onset striking in infancy or in young adulthood. This is considered an autoimmune disease where the body has destroyed its own insulin producing cells that appeared as foreign threats. With no insulin production, it must instead be injected. Properly managed eating is also necessary and includes usually some simple sugars. Some especially those living in underdeveloped countries are increasingly diagnosed with Type 1 as adults. Known as slow onset and Type 1.5 this is usually due to antibodies that slowly attack the insulin producing cells. These patients usually are not overweight, do not immediately require insulin and have little or no resistance to it.

The issue in either case is high blood glucose levels damage the walls of blood vessels, nerve endings and cause the eyes, heart and kidneys to take on water and swell. This swelling combined with vascular damage can lead to debilitating outcomes like kidney failure, glaucoma, heart attack and stroke. This is why normalizing blood glucose levels is so important.

There are many misreported aspects of Diabetes. No you don’t catch it from others or get it from eating too many sweets. Yes Type 2s may lose enough weight to make their insulin work better but this does not work for Type 1 patients. High blood sugar is more of a longer term threat unless it is extremely high. Low blood sugar something Type 1s often experience is quite dangerous as it can render unconsciousness. For most Type 2s it is stress and body weight combined with genetic background that are primary factors in causation. For many Type 1’s a viral infection combined with some genetic traits is the culprit.

Regardless of type it is imperative any diabetic patient manage their blood glucose as best as possible. Healthy eating, exercise and positive mental attitude are all important. The same applies to prevention for some especially those with a family history. Further research will likely unlock other causes and hopefully lead to viable cures in the future. Until then, check your sugar.

Knee Orthosis – Finding An Orthopedic Brace Provider In Your Area

Does your knee bother you?

Are you a medical professional trying to help your patient get the right knee orthosis (knee brace)?

1. The Benefits of a Knee Orthosis (Brace)

The term “orthosis” refers to an “external support” or brace. If you are someone who is looking for a knee orthosis (aka a knee brace) then this article can come in really handy for you.

A knee brace is a support that can help protect your knee, including your ACL, MCL and other ligaments. It can also help to protect your meniscus and give you support that can really make a difference in the way you walk or participate in sports.  The trick is getting the right knee brace, because if you look online, you will find that there are so many to choose from.  This is why it is important to work with a brace professional (known as an orthotist) in your area. There are several kinds of knee braces, such as an ACL knee brace, or a “post op” knee brace and an individual certified and licensed in orthotics can really help you (or your patients).

2. The Benefits of Working With A Medical Brace Professional (Orthotist)

If you get a brace from an orthotist in your area, they will be able to adjust a brace if you need it. However, if you get a brace from a site online, you can either return it or keep it. Adjusting it will totally be in your hands if you work with an internet site.  This is one reason why you should work with a company that is local to where you live or work.

3. Your Insurance May Actually Cover The Entire Cost of Your Knee Orthosis

Is it true that something can actually be free!? – Yes, it is possible in this case. A knee orthosis can be covered under your insurance plan, or your patient’s insurance plan. If it is not totally covered, usually a large part of the brace can be covered, minimizing your out of pocket expense.

4. Finding A Knee Brace Provider Near You – Chicago & Suburbs Examples

If you are looking for a knee orthosis (knee brace) near you then you can follow these simple steps to find a brace in your area. For example, if you live in Chicago, you can go to google and type in “knee orthosis” and “chicago”, or “knee brace” and “60611”. – Or, if you live in a suburb, you can type in “knee orthosis” and “Wood Dale”. This is a general example that applies to Chicago, but if you live in New York, or Miami, then same approach can help you get the brace you need.

Lower Your High Blood Pressure With ion eXtra

Statistic on American Heart Association said about one in three person have hypertension or high blood pressure. In 2006 alone, 74.5 million people in the United States age 20 and older have high blood pressure. This condition will kill a lot of them yet 33 percent of the sufferers didn’t know that they even have high blood pressure.

Normal Hypertension Medicine Just Don’t Cut It

Even if you’re one of the two-thirds that know you have hypertension and are dealing with it with medicines, there are more bad news. Conventional hypertension medicine or treatment doesn’t solve the problem, they just keep it under control. Let me tell you why.

Here is a simple way of describing what is happening. Imagine that you have a hose in your garden connected to a water tap. If you stand on the hose, the pressure in it will build up and the hose may burst or the tap explodes. The traditional way of dealing with this problem was to turn the tap down (beta-blockers), to make a small hole in the hose to let some of the water out (diuretics) or apply a chemical treatment to make the hose spongier (ACE inhibitors). None of these remedies got the foot off the hose! Now imagine that the hose is connected to millions of garden sprinklers and, instead of having your foot on the hose you start to block up some of the holes in the sprinklers; one or two at first and then hundreds and then thousands; eventually you will get the same effect as the foot on the hose. This is what happens in the human body when millions of capillaries, the very small blood vessels closest to the surface of the skin, get destroyed.

So what destroys the capillaries? All living cells employ a process called osmosis to control their chemical make-up and to thrive. This is the process by which cells balance their liquid content in relation to solids and, if one cell is more solid than its neighbour, they will exchange fluid until they are in equilibrium. In the human body, the principle solid content of the water circulating between our cells is sodium. If the sodium levels get too high then blockages occur that cause leaks from the perspiration system that then squash and kill capillaries. As they die, blood pressure goes up.

Let me give simple example of this process at work – and put an old myth to bed. It is usually thought that there is some magic substance in red wine which lowers blood pressure. In fact, a little alcohol thins the blood which is a good thing because most people have blood which is slightly too thick because of an excess of sugar. So, a little alcohol gets blood back to normal and is helpful in reducing blood pressure. If more and more alcohol is drunk then there is more alcohol in the blood now making it much thinner than normal. To correct this, the body adds lots of salt (a thickener) to the blood. The process is called osmosis and it works to keep the body in balance. This excess salt now raises blood pressure. So little and often alcohol is beneficial, bingeing is not. And why is only red wine beneficial and not white? White wine usually contains plenty of sugar so the sugar in a small amount of white wine cancels out the beneficial effect of the small amount of alcohol. Drinking lots of white wine on the other hand will increase blood pressure faster than red.

Unfortunately, drinking alcohol is not the long-term answer to solving hypertension. The average human being has something like four million sweat glands. In a hypertensive person, a million or more of these are blocked and the surrounding capillaries are under stress and this is what causes the problem.

Benefits of ion eXtra

This is where ion eXtra comes along. ion eXtra is a capsule containing specially formulated natural electrolytes that are sealed in so that they cannot dissolve while passing through the body but which the body can detect and react to. ion eXtra acts on the metabolism to restore natural innate immunity. Basically it opens up the sweat glands hence lowering pressure. It’s a new and exciting approach on hypertension treatment.

Pulse Oximeter Technology

Asthma sufferers have historically been very hesitant to engage in activities that would be strenuous for them and that would potentially cause an asthma attack. The problem is that the asthma sufferer would be engaging in a very typical activity such as helping their child ride a bike. As they are with their child they may not realize that their blood oxygen saturation which is the percentage of oxygen in the hemoglobin. But now there is relief. A pulse oximeter is a portable medical device that measures the blood oxygen saturation or SpO2 with great accuracy. Simply placing your finger inside the oximeter allows the device to use an infrared light to measure the percentage of oxygen in the hemoglobin. This infrared light then sends a signal back to the oximeter computer chip which then produces a specific number that indicates your SpO2 levels.

Now how is this useful for asthma suffers? Well the biggest benefit to asthma sufferers is the fact that the oximeter can provide a preventative oxygen check feature to make sure that enough oxygen is getting to the individual to prevent an asthma attack. For example the individual who is helping their child ride a bike can simply take out the portable oximeter and place their finger inside. After which they will be able to see what their SpO2 levels are and to determine whether they need to stop and rest in order to bring their oxygen levels back to normal levels or that they are fine and continue in the physical activity they were engaging in before.

A pulse oximeter is truly a unique device. The new generations of oximeter devices measure pulse rate and SpO2 while being an extremely small and portable device. Previously the old generations of oximeter devices where large and bulk and only used in such settings as hospitals, clinics, or the military. But with the advent of new small chip technology those large oximeter devices have been transformed to significantly smaller devices that provide just as much accuracy and dependability as the previous generations of oximeter devices. We live in a society that we are constantly on the go. Whether we are rushing to get to work in the morning or its weekend and we are running errands or on a weekend getaway trip, we are always on the go. This creates an issue for those with health conditions that require monitoring of their health and vital signs wherever they go.

For example, and individual with asthma may want to travel or to go for a weekend getaway but is afraid that she will not be able to accurately determine her oxygen levels and may experience an asthma attack. However, with the use of a portable pulse oximeter they no longer need to worry about this. They simply can take the oximeter which easily fits inside their purse or pocket and measure their vital signs wherever they go. If they see that their oxygen levels are at levels that may potentially cause an asthma attack then they simply stop and take care to make sure their levels come back to normal.

Coronary Heart Disease Overview

Medically known as coronary heart disease it is associated with the development of plaque in the artery walls that constrict and narrow them preventing the free flow of blood. In other words the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become hardened and narrowed due to a build up of plaque in the inner walls. As the plaque continues to build up in the arteries blood flow to the heart is severely reduced. Known outcomes of this scenario is a heart attack. When the artery walls become completely blocked by plaque they prevent vital oxygen and nutrients from reaching the heart. A heart attack occurs and has the potential to cause permanent heart damage to the heart muscle.

Heart condition is one amongst a list of a variety of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases include stroke, high blood pressure, and rheumatic heart condition and they relate to the diseases of the heart and blood vessel system.

A rampart myth amongst many people both men and women is that heart condition can be cured using surgery. In reality, heart condition is a lifetime disorder once it one gets it one will always have it. Surgical procedures such as bypass and angioplasty can help blood and oxygen flow to the heart more easily. This does not take away the damaged arteries which leaves the danger of heart attack lingering for life.

Daily habits will have to change.

Drastic lifestyle modifications will need to follow a heart condition because the condition of blood vessels will steadily deteriorate if the old lifestyle of diet and indulgences is maintained. Controlling the disease becomes therefor extremely important.

The risk factors of heart condition will include:

  • tobacco use such as cigarette smoking
  • over weight or obese
  • high blood pressure
  • high blood cholesterol
  • sedentary lifestyle
  • diabetes

Credible studies who that those who die from heart condition have at least one of these major risk factors. This number represents 95 percent of those who die from heart condition. In particular for women, age can be added as a risk factor once a woman reaches 55 years of age. Going through menopause increases this risk by two. This menopause can be natural or done via medical procedure. This age factor is also as a result of the understanding that it is at this middle age of 55 that other important risk factors such as high blood pressure also develop in women. Amongst risk factors that cannot be controlled is family history. People with a father or brother who had a heart attack at 55 or a mother or sister who had one before the age of 65 are most likely to get heart condition them self. The approach then is to control as many risk factors as can be controlled to minimize the actual development risk of heart condition.
